Garden Design & Planning

Bespoke garden design — from first sketch and style direction to a complete planting plan.

Garden design is the collaborative development of a plan for your garden through on-site conversations. During multiple walks through your garden we discuss how you use it, where you want to sit, what atmosphere fits, and which constraints or opportunities are present. These conversations lead to a scaled site plan, a planting plan per season, and choices for terraces, paths and boundaries, with indications for lighting or water features. Smaller scopes work too: a border plan, a standalone planting advice, or a focused plan for redesigning one half of the garden. A good design accounts for seasonal light, soil type, desired maintenance level and phasing — because a plan can be carried out over several years, keeping the budget manageable without losing coherence.

Our approach to garden design

  1. First walkthrough — on-site conversation: needs, use, existing planting and constraints mapped out.
  2. Concept in dialogue — we think out loud about options together, walk back through the garden, adjust.
  3. Design on paper — once aligned: scaled plan, planting plan, materials list and cost estimate.
  4. Build or DIY — we install it, or you continue (with another contractor of your choice).

What we watch for in garden design

A garden you no longer actually go out and sit in — it happens quietly over years. Usually it's not one single problem.

The seating area is often in an unfavourable spot for sun or wind, the maintenance has slipped, the border has gone monotonous after June, and the routes through the garden no longer match how you actually use it. That's why we walk through the garden multiple times — preferably across different seasons — and discuss on the spot what works and what doesn't. Light, time of use and soil behaviour differ strongly between June and December; a design conceived only on a sunny April day rarely works year-round.

In practice the design is mostly a conversation: we walk through the garden with you, name options out loud, shift and discard on the spot. Phasing comes up too: start with the seating area or the entrance, planting later, paving in a third year if needed. Only once we've reached a direction together does it get put into a site plan and planting plan on paper. That way you don't end up with a document that still needs negotiating — you'll recognise it from the very first sketch.

Garden design in Purmerend and surroundings

Polder locations in Beemster or Edam-Volendam call for a different design than city gardens in central Purmerend. With high water tables, planting needs to handle wet winters — ornamental grasses, astilbes and heavier geraniums hold up better than Mediterranean species. In narrow city gardens in Zaandam and Diemen, vertical planting, reflective surfaces and directed light become decisive. Soil and light conditions always come before stylistic choices. See the service area page for all the places we cover.

Why clients choose us for garden design

  • Design that works across seasons and time — planting that doesn't only show in May.
  • One contact for design and installation — no intermediaries or miscommunication between parties.
  • Honest phasing — it doesn't have to happen all at once; the plan still works over three years.

A garden design can be a brand new garden or a focused revision of an existing one. We work throughout Purmerend, Zaandam, Hoorn, Diemen and Edam-Volendam. For just filling in a border, see planting.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a garden design take?
From first visit to final plan often 2 to 6 weeks, depending on scope and number of revision rounds.
What do I receive at the end?
A scaled site plan with a seasonal planting plan, mood images and a materials list. The conversations along the way set the direction; the documents form the final result.
What if I love the design but can't have everything installed right now?
A good plan can be executed in phases. We factor that in during design.
Do you also install the design yourselves?
Yes. We do both design and complete installation — or you take just the design and use a contractor of your choice.
