Outdoor Lighting

Atmospheric and functional outdoor lighting — low-voltage, energy-efficient, precisely aimed.

Outdoor lighting is the design and installation of exterior fittings for atmosphere, safety and function — accent lighting on trees or facade greenery, path and driveway lighting, and ambient lighting on terraces or near water features. Most systems run on low voltage (12 V) with LED fittings that draw little power and last a long time. Colour temperature sets the mood: warm white (2700–3000 K) for facade and atmosphere, neutral white (3500–4000 K) for functional walking and driving light. Fittings need an IP rating that suits their location — IP65 or higher for fully outdoor installation. Wiring runs underground in waterproof connections, with a single central transformer whose capacity equals the sum of fittings plus reserve for later expansion.

Our approach to outdoor lighting

  1. Plan on site — preferably in the evening, to see where light makes the difference.
  2. Lighting plan — fittings, colour temperature, zoning, control method.
  3. Installation — cables underground, fittings aimed, transformer in a safe spot.
  4. Tuning — timing, dimming and switching behaviour until it's right.

What we watch for in outdoor lighting

A driveway so dark visitors trip, despite a bright spotlight on the facade — it's one of the most common complaints. Usually it's not a shortage of light.

The problem is more often badly aimed light. A single bright spot from the facade creates harsh shadows; the contrast is so extreme that eyes don't adapt and the dark part stays effectively invisible. Lighting from one high point works for buildings, but never for walkable paths. Bright spots with cool colour temperature (above 5000 K) also give a clinical, unwelcoming feel in a garden. High LED wattage in the wrong place means light pollution for neighbours and no improvement for you.

In practice we replace a single bright source with multiple lower points at eye height or ground level. Bollards, small ground spots or path fittings at 30–60 cm give an evenly distributed light that doesn't dazzle. Colour temperature around 2700–3000 K makes the garden look inviting in the evening rather than clinical. A dusk switch with dimming function ramps up gradually as eyes need time to adapt, and app control allows zoning per area. We always size the transformer with 20–30% reserve so later expansion can happen without new cabling.

Outdoor lighting in Purmerend and surroundings

On listed buildings in Edam-Volendam, subtle accent lighting on facades often works better than direct floodlights — the historic architecture comes alive without light pollution that bothers neighbours. In new-build neighbourhoods around Hoorn and Diemen, with sleek architecture, neutral white (3500–4000 K) can suit the modern look. In older parts of Purmerend and Zaanstreek, with narrow plots close together, shielded lighting matters to prevent overlooking neighbours — fittings with limited beam angle solve that.

Why clients choose us for outdoor lighting

  • Light that works — not a garden full of bright spots, but targeted work with attention to atmosphere.
  • Safe low voltage — easily expandable, energy-efficient, no electrician needed for adding fittings later.
  • One party for plan and install — no separate electricians, one point of contact.

A well-lit terrace or driveway changes how often you're outside in the dark months — and how safe your home looks. We work throughout Purmerend, Zaandam, Hoorn, Diemen and Edam-Volendam. For terraces where the lighting will go, see decking and paving.

Frequently asked questions

Can lighting be installed in an existing garden?
Yes, usually with small trenches alongside paths and borders. We carefully restore the planting.
What about energy use?
Low-voltage LED uses very little power. A whole garden lighting setup typically uses less than one indoor ceiling lamp.
Can I add more fittings later?
Yes, provided we reserve capacity on the transformer at install. We do that as standard.
What is your service area?
We work in Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Diemen, Purmerend, Zaandam and Hoorn. Don't see your town? Just ask — often we're already there. See also the service area page.
