Lawn Care & Mowing

A sharp, healthy lawn — mowing, scarifying, feeding and repair in one set of hands.

Lawn care is the year-round maintenance and improvement of a turf: mowing at the right height, scarifying to remove moss and old grass, aeration to relieve soil compaction, feeding by season, and overseeding bare patches. The approach varies per season — spring focuses on waking up and overseeding, summer on mowing and watering, and autumn on getting it ready for winter with a potassium-rich feed. With persistent issues like moss, brown patches or poor recovery, we first diagnose the underlying cause — structure, pH, drainage — before sowing or treating.

Our approach to lawn care

  1. Lawn diagnosis — soil type, water balance, sun/shade pattern and the state of the turf.
  2. Plan for the season — which treatment when, tuned to soil and weather.
  3. Execution with the right kit — scarifier, aerator, spreader. No heavy machinery on sensitive soils.
  4. Aftercare and explanation — mowing height, watering frequency, when you can walk on it again.

What we watch for in lawn care

Brown patches that still won't recover after two mows — it's one of the most common complaints. The mower is rarely the issue.

The cause is usually a stack of factors. Soil compaction from frequent passes with a heavy machine means roots can't get oxygen. Mowing too short during drought lets the soil heat up and dry out below the root zone. Decaying moss blocks light and gives nothing back. Below pH 5.5, grass can no longer absorb nitrogen properly, making feeding pointless. On clay-over-peat (common in this polder region) moisture and compaction problems often combine.

In practice we start with a soil test — pH and structure — followed by aeration and scarifying. Then comes targeted feeding based on what's actually missing, and overseeding with a grass mix that suits the light and soil. With heavy compaction we add a sanding round. Raising mowing height to 4–5 cm during summer protects the roots from drying out.

Lawn care in Purmerend and surroundings

Many lawns in the polder region around Purmerend, Beemster and Edam-Volendam sit on clay with high groundwater — they need a different approach than the sandy soil in Hoorn or in new-build neighbourhoods around Diemen. On clay, aeration works better than overseeding alone; on sand, fertiliser disappears faster through leaching, so several small applications beat one big one. In Zaanstreek, where lawns often sit on peat, we have to be extra careful with heavy machines — the soil takes badly to it.

Why clients choose us for lawn care

  • Diagnosis first — we don't treat the wrong cause and don't push overseeding when the problem is below ground.
  • Patient recovery — a top-condition lawn takes a season, not an afternoon.
  • Local soil knowledge — we know the clay-on-peat around Purmerend and the sandy soil towards Hoorn.

A lawn that's been off for years can often still be restored, provided the approach is right. We work throughout Purmerend, Zaandam, Hoorn, Diemen and Edam-Volendam. For complete garden work where the lawn is included, see garden maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my lawn have so much moss?
Usually a combination of damp ground, shade and compaction. Scarifying alone won't fix it lastingly — addressing the cause does.
Can a worn-out lawn still be restored?
In many cases yes, with a programme over one season. With very old turf, reseeding can be faster.
When is the best time to scarify?
Spring (April–May) is ideal. Autumn is also possible, but not during frost or extreme drought.
What is your service area?
