Garden Maintenance

A steady maintenance rhythm for your garden — flexible in frequency, no mandatory subscription.

Garden maintenance is the periodic work that keeps a garden in shape: mowing, weeding, pruning, hedge trimming, tending borders, feeding, leaf clearing, and getting the garden ready by season for growth or rest. Pruning happens by species at the right moment — summer bloomers after flowering, spring bloomers right afterwards, woody shrubs in winter. Maintenance also covers soil care: compost applications, mulching and keeping an eye on pH. Bigger interventions — rejuvenation pruning of overgrown shrubs, going through a border, soil improvement where drainage is poor — slot into the year plan where possible, so they don't return as separate jobs.

Our approach to garden maintenance

  1. Introduction on site — walk through the garden, brief, what's in and out of scope.
  2. Plan per season — rhythm (monthly, per season, on call) and which tasks when.
  3. Execution by a steady landscaper — someone who gets to know your garden over time.
  4. Feedback after each visit — you know what's been done and what's coming up.

What we watch for in garden maintenance

Hydrangeas suddenly drooping in July despite weekly watering — it's one of the calls we get. Usually it's not a water shortage.

The cause is more often a combination: planting has grown so dense over years that lower leaves get no air movement; the topsoil dries to a hard crust while deeper in the root zone there's still moisture; feeding hasn't been adjusted for years and the NPK ratio has slipped. With clay over peat, common around here, soil compaction also plays a role — roots can't find oxygen.

In practice we start with a soil test and a thinning of the densest spots. Then mulch goes down to retain moisture, and the feeding schedule is adjusted based on what's actually missing. With old, overgrown shrubs we do rejuvenation pruning spread over two seasons, so the plant doesn't suddenly weaken.

Garden maintenance in Purmerend and surroundings

Gardens in the polder region around Purmerend, Beemster and Edam-Volendam sit on clay over peat — dense, poorly draining ground that cracks in August and floods in November. Soil improvement (compost, grit applications, aeration) belongs to regular maintenance there rather than being a separate job. In new-build neighbourhoods around Diemen and Hoorn the soil is often leaner and sandier — focus shifts to building up feeding and moisture retention. See the service area page for all the places we cover.
