Hedge Trimming & Pruning

Skilfully trimming and shaping hedges, shrubs and ornamentals.

Hedge trimming is the periodic shaping of hedges, espaliered trees and topiary, keeping them dense, sharp and at the desired height. Work covers top trimming, side trimming, rejuvenation pruning of overgrown or bare hedges, and shape pruning of topiary like box or yew. Right timing varies by species: beech and hornbeam don't tolerate trimming during flowering, privet handles several rounds per year, and conifers can't be cut back into old wood. With bigger interventions — a hedge untouched for years or restoring a formal shape — work happens in phases over multiple seasons, so dormant buds can be triggered and the plant recovers per growth phase.

Our approach to hedge trimming

  1. See what's there — species, height, condition, desired shape.
  2. Plan at the right moment — the right pruning window per species.
  3. Trimming — sharp tools, no torn edges, borders below protected.
  4. Disposal — clippings taken with us, ground surfaces left clean.

What we watch for in hedge trimming

A hedge bare at the bottom while the top sags out — with beech, privet and yew this is a common pattern. The recovery approach is more subtle than it looks.

The cause usually lies in the shape. A hedge wider at the top than at the base no longer gets light to the lower branches, so they stop growing back and eventually die off. If on top of that nothing has been cut back into old wood for years, dormant buds (resting branchlets deep in the plant) have gone inactive. With conifers this is even irreversible — they don't produce new shoots from bare branches. With beech, hornbeam, yew and privet, recovery is possible with patience.

In practice we start with reprofiling: making the top narrower than the base (tapered), so light reaches the lower parts again. With beech and yew this is followed by phased cut-back into old wood over 2–3 seasons, which wakes dormant buds. With conifers honest advice is usually in order: replacement is faster than attempts at recovery. Big rejuvenation pruning we time in the right window — late winter for yew, right after first leaf for beech.

Hedge trimming in Purmerend and surroundings

Many city gardens in Purmerend and Zaandam have long-standing privets as boundaries — they bloom annually and need 2–3 trimming rounds per season to stay dense. In polder villages like Edam-Volendam and Beemster you see more beech and hornbeam as formal boundaries. They need one heavier trim in the right window, and with good management can live to 50 years. In new-build neighbourhoods around Diemen and Hoorn we often find young box and yew topiary that need annual shape pruning. See the service area page for all the places we cover.

Why clients choose us for hedge trimming

  • Right timing per species — not just "when we have time", but within the window that suits the plant.
  • Sharp tools — prevents torn branches and brown leaves that come from dull blades.
  • Cleanly delivered — clippings taken away, borders and terraces beneath left clean.

Is your hedge on the line between still rescuable and ready to replace? Usually a brief inspection settles that in one visit. We work throughout Purmerend, Zaandam, Hoorn, Diemen and Edam-Volendam. For tree pruning, see tree surgery.

With beech, yew and laurel often yes through targeted rejuvenation pruning in the right season. With conifers usually not.
Do you also do shape pruning of trees or topiary?
Yes, we trim topiary and espaliered trees too. For large trees see tree surgery.
