Seasonal Clean-up

Spring or autumn clean-up — garden ready for the new season.

Seasonal clean-up is an intensive one-off garden session at a turning point in the year — usually in spring (February to April) to wake the garden up, or in autumn (October to December) to ready it for winter. Spring work covers cutting back spent perennials, the first mow, cleaning borders, feeding and cleaning terrace and furniture. Autumn work focuses on leaf clearing, cutting back woody stems, winterising irrigation, covering frost-sensitive plants with ground cover or fleece, and cleaning tools for storage. Right timing is subtle: clearing too early in spring disturbs insects still overwintering in old leaf, too late in autumn lets fungi advance in damp dead material.

Our approach to seasonal clean-up

  1. Intake — where the garden stands now, what's priority.
  2. Execution in one visit — thorough and efficient, not stretched over several days.
  3. Disposal — all green waste leaves in one go.
  4. Advice for what's next — what your garden needs in the coming quarter.

What we watch for in seasonal clean-up

A garden unrecognisable after winter under leaves, old stems and rotted remnants — late February or early March the inbox is full of these photos. And the approach isn't as simple as "clear it all".

Rotted remnants can harbour fungi that affect perennials over time; old leaf stuck in borders smothers first shoots and sets growth back two weeks. On the other hand, too thorough a clear-up is also a loss: ladybirds, earwigs, hedgehogs and solitary bees overwinter in exactly the "messy" leaf under hedges and behind compost heaps. With early clearing (January, in mild winters) these beneficial insects are massively disturbed before their cycle is round. With late clearing (end of May) the first shoots are already damaged by old material lying on top.

In practice we make a distinction: thorough clearing where disease spread or growth issue is in play — under perennials, on borders, around fruit trees. And consciously leaving some mess in less visible corners under hedges and behind compost. Cutting back perennials phased: first only the rotted stems, then later (at 8 °C soil temperature) the decorative ones. Autumn clean-up we time so leaves have largely fallen but aren't still stuck to frozen spots.

Seasonal clean-up in Purmerend and surroundings

On clay around Purmerend and Beemster, damp old leaf lies extra long in winter — fungal spores get more chance there than on sand. In Edam-Volendam with its high water table, removing wet green waste in a wheelie bin can be tricky; compost heap or chipper transport works better. In city gardens in Zaandam and Hoorn, tight working space is the challenge — we work with smaller machines and more handwork. In Diemen, with many '80s-era gardens, we often find old borders that call for an extra-thorough spring intervention to become productive again.

Why clients choose us for seasonal clean-up

  • Thorough in one go — no half clear-up that needs redoing in a week.
  • More than just leaf blowing — we also look at what needs to happen for the coming season.
  • Disposal included — your garden and your wheelie bin stay clean.

A well-planned seasonal clean-up is often the starting point for more structured maintenance. We work throughout Purmerend, Zaandam, Hoorn, Diemen and Edam-Volendam. For the follow-up rhythm this kind of work fits into, see garden maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for spring clean-up?
Late February to mid-April, depending on weather. Not too early — insects often still overwinter in old leaf.
Do you also do just leaf clearing?
Yes, separate leaf rounds are also possible — usually between October and December.
Can a seasonal clean-up be the start of regular maintenance?
Absolutely. Many clients start that way and switch to a maintenance rhythm later.
